Most such promises last only as long as the gadget stays in a drawer after the second week. Most research on this topic is also short: people are given a tracker, measured for a couple of months, and report an increase in steps. What will happen in a year or two, when the novelty wears off, remained an open question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Korean cohort study of 5,507 people tracked real-world behaviour over six years for the first time \u2013 not in a laboratory, but in everyday life. The result is more complex than a slogan, and therefore more useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did the study show about wearable devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists from Yonsei University took the national Korea Media Panel. This is a long-term survey where the same people are interviewed every year. The researchers took two points in time: 2016 and 2022. From 8847 participants, 5507 with complete data for both dates were selected. Those who already had a gadget in 2016 were removed \u2013 to isolate the clean effect of first encountering the tracker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two groups remained. The first comprised 730 people who had acquired a wearable device for the first time over the course of six years. The second comprised 4,777 who had never acquired one. 13% versus 87%. The question was narrow: does activity increase faster in those who started wearing the gadget than in those who didn\u2019t?.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method is called difference-in-differences. It compares not just \u00abactive versus inactive\u00bb, but <em>change<\/em> behaviour in each group between two points. Imagine two people with the same start. One bought a tracker, the other didn't. After six years, we look at how much their curves diverged. This filters out those who were active from birth, and shows the actual contribution of the gadget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activity was counted across three domains. Physical \u2013 sport, walking, outdoor movement. Social \u2013 meeting friends, communities, volunteering. Cultural \u2013 hobbies, exhibitions, events. Each domain was converted into an estimated number of times per year, allowing the domains to be compared with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">+36% physical activity \u2014 the key figure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the group using a tracker, physical activity increased by 36% more than in the group without one (rate ratio 1.36, 95% CI 1.12\u20131.64). In absolute terms, non-adopters started with 20 \u00abactivities\u00bb per year and reached 32. Adopters jumped from 31 to 67 \u2014 more than double over the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall activity across all domains increased by 24% (RR 1.24). Cultural activity rose by as much as 78% (RR 1.78), although the sample size is small, so the percentage increase looks more dramatic than the absolute increase. Overall, the picture is clear: people with gadgets started moving significantly more, and the gap persisted not for a month or two, but for six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The age breakdown is particularly interesting, as it challenges the stereotype. The most consistent effect was not seen among young people, but in the 40\u201364 age group. Physical activity increased by 50% more significantly in this group (RR 1.50, statistically significant). There was also an increase among the younger age group (20\u201339). However, it did not reach statistical significance \u2014 probably because young people are already active, and there is simply no need for a gadget to encourage them further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion is obvious: a wearable device gives the most to someone for whom movement is no longer automatic. After forty, the body stops moving \u00abon its own,\u00bb and an external stimulus is most valuable precisely then. This isn't a gadget for those who already run marathons. It's a support for those whose activity has begun to decline with age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does a wearable device change behaviour?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors did not directly measure the mechanism, but rely on self-determination theory. The tracker provides three things. The goal is a conditional 10,000 steps, a specific benchmark instead of a vague \u00abneed to move more\u00bb. Feedback \u2013 the number is visible in real-time, progress ceases to be imaginary. Self-monitoring \u2013 the history for the week is in front of your eyes, you can see your own dynamics. Together, this fuels a sense of competence: \u00abI see progress, therefore I can\u00bb, and this feeling in itself motivates further movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the difference from the usual \u00abdecided to walk more\u00bb lies. An intention without measurement fades in two weeks \u2013 exactly when the initial enthusiasm burns out. The number on the screen turns the abstract \u00abneed to move\u00bb into the concrete \u00abtoday 4200, I'm not reaching the target.\u00bb This solves the main problem with willpower: it works poorly with vague goals. An external tracker takes over this task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This echoes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.life-on.com.ua\/en\/dog-accountability-physical-activity\/\">our review of the study on dog walking<\/a>. External accountability is a dog that needs walking, regardless of your mood, shaving off 41 minutes of sedentary time per day. The mechanism is essentially the same. Something external takes responsibility for movement, and you move even when your internal motivation is lacking. A gadget does the same thing, except instead of a dog, it's a number on your wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The gadget did not boost social activity.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is where the tracker proved powerless: social activity. Meeting friends, participating in communities, volunteering \u2013 no difference between the groups (RR 1.03, statistically insignificant). A gadget with or without a tracker \u2013 it had no impact on a person's social life whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logically. A wearable device counts steps, not friends. Social life depends on other people, context, communities \u2013 things that a wrist-worn counter doesn't control or measure. You can close all your activity rings and still not see a single living person all week. It's a useful reminder of the tool's limitations: the tracker optimises what it can measure and doesn't touch what it can't.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here's the first practical warning. If a gadget is purchased with the thought of \u00abmaking life healthier in general\u00bb, it will only cover movement. Everything else \u2013 relationships, communities, a sense of belonging \u2013 will have to be built separately, without the help of hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why these figures are not a sentence, but a guideline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now for the important part that gadget adverts will silently gloss over. This is <strong>Association, not causation<\/strong>. The authors themselves highlight this, and here's why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who got a fitness tracker were different from the start from those who didn\u2019t. They were younger, better educated, wealthier, and more likely to come from large cities. Among adopters, only 3% were over 65 years old \u2014 compared to 38% in the group without a gadget. Perhaps part of the increase in activity is not down to the wearable device itself, but rather a characteristic of the people who choose it. Those who are more active and motivated are more likely to buy gadgets. And so the tracker does not create activity, but simply accompanies those who were already planning to get moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study only had two time points, so testing for \u00abparallel trends\u00bb before the purchase was impossible. Activity was measured by self-report \u2013 the person recalled how many times they had done something during the year. And the period 2016-2022 included the pandemic, which reshaped everyone's activity regardless of their gadgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these caveats negate the result. But they do remove the magic. A tracker isn't a magic wand that makes a person active by itself. It's a tool that amplifies someone who is already somewhat ready to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do with this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few sober conclusions from the figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gadget works as an amplifier, not an engine. If there's even the slightest readiness to move, the tracker will set it off, especially after 40, when movement ceases to be automatic. If there's no readiness at all, the bracelet will quietly join the collection in a drawer, along with previous good intentions. The 'thing' doesn't create motivation from scratch. It multiplies what's already there, however weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefit is specific and narrow: movement. Not social life, not \u00abhealth in general,\u00bb not some abstract well-being. Buying a wearable device for the sake of an all-encompassing life improvement is overestimating what the number on your wrist is capable of. It counts steps. That's where its superpower ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, the trap we have already written about in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.life-on.com.ua\/en\/sedentary-behavior-stroke-risk\/\">in the context of excessive tracking<\/a>. The number should spur you into action, not become an end in itself. When \u00abclosing the rings\u00bb becomes more important than the actual experience of a walk, the gadget turns into an Excel spreadsheet \u2013 a table you keep for the sake of the table, rather than for the life it represents. The tool was meant to serve movement, but it starts to serve itself. And then the 36% steps turn into a number you admire, rather than the movement you experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six years of data say one simple thing: a wearable device genuinely correlates with people moving more.
